Argan oil is known to be one of the rarest, hence most expensive oils in the world. Pure, original argan oil is hard to obtain and production is time-consuming, thereby its price is high.  Not all Argan Oil on the market is real and pure as many so called producer may diluted it, just to make it cheaper.

But it’s worth to spend some extra pennies to buy 100% pure oil, instead of paying less for something you could be found in your kitchen cupboard.

1.  The Ingredients List

Look for cosmetics that has only one ingredient: 100% Argan Oil (Argania Spinosa) Kernel Oil.  No preservatives, no fragrances, no parrafinum, not even water. Just pure, oragnic Argan Oil.

Research have shown that when you combine argan oil with other ingredients you actually DEGRADE the effects of Argan oil.

2. The packaging

Don’t buy Argan Oil sold in clear or plastic bottles. Light breaks down the oil’s best properties and dark glass is the only way to store Argan Oil. Glass packaging is also eco friendly and fully recyclable. Any argan oil sell in clear glass should be claim to be high quality.

3. The price

The price of the product is also determined by the concentration of argan on the product. Check ingredients carefully, you should not pay for a product which has a low concentration of argan oil. But as I mentioned before the best is to use pure argan oil without chemicals and parabens added.

4. The scent

Argan oil has a mild nutty aroma (some identify it as a smell of popcorn or rubber band). The scent disappears after few minutes upon contact with your skin, as true Argan Oil absorbs quickly.

5. The texture

Argan Oil should be smooth, non-stocky and not too watery.  Disappearing into your skin. When applying on skin should give soothing effect.

6.  The color

Cosmetic argan oil has light golden yellow color. If the color is too light, the most likely is that it was mixed with other oils. Culinary argan oil is s a golden brown color.

Ensure that your oil is labelled “100% pure”, “cold pressed” or “Made in Morocco”. And it should have at least ECOCERT certificate as well.

8. Sediment

As this is natural product, sediment is a sign of quality and there is nothing unusual. Good oil, that is not highly refined, may have a tiny bit of sediment at the bottom of the bottle and will appears a bit “cloudy”. Don’t be alarmed. You also don’t have to do anything, just use your oil as usual knowing that it is a real thing.

The sediment are insoluble fraction in the oil, composed of fatty alcohols, tocopherols, carotenoids, sterols, etc.

9. Culinary or cosmetic

There are two types of argan oil available: cosmetic grade and culinary grade.

To obtain culinary argan oil the nuts are first roasted which destroy most of the cosmetic rich nutrients. Cosmetic grade is not roasted and hence contains all the essential nutrients required by the skin and hair.
